LEAD STORY
How Diversity's Spring Awakening Will Impact Your Inclusion Efforts

From the Arab Spring to this year’s early Spring, renewal is in the air.

The economy is finally starting to shake off the most brutal aspects of its meltdown, the presidential elections in the United States are fast approaching, and the U.S. Supreme Court is weighing its decision about the future of healthcare.

The diversity and inclusion field is going through it’s own time of upheaval. Diversity and inclusion leaders and their teams are facing changes. And while many companies are significantly ramping up their diversity and inclusion efforts, budgets, and commitments, others are scaling back.

The fulfillment of the promise of new life, rebirth, or change never happens silently and smoothly. It comes through the agony and screams of birth pangs. And our dreams of what is possible are held in check by the realities of attitudes, power, budgets, and priorities. Yet, the tumult of a changing season can be the most invigorating time. And at Diversity Best Practices, we’ve been leaning into the discomfort in the most generative of ways.

Over the past couple of months, we have been busy leading conferences, webinars, and workshops that bring new and innovative thinking in the field, particularly in three areas: cultural competence and agility, the rise in opportunities for women, and the engagement of diverse talent.

For a bud of information on each topic,

Diversity Holidays
April is Celebrate Diversity Month, started in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity surrounding us all. By celebrating differences and similarities during this month, organizers hope that people will get a deeper understanding of each other.

April is Autism Awareness Month, established to raise awareness about the developmental disorder that affects children's normal development of social and communication skills.

April 6 is Good Friday, celebrated by Christians to commemorate the execution of Jesus by crucifixion and is recognized on the Friday before Easter.

April 6 (sunset) – April 14 (nightfall) is Passover, a Jewish holiday celebrated each spring in remembrance of the Jews’ deliverance out of slavery in Egypt in 1300 B.C. On the first two days of Passover, a traditional Seder is eaten and the story of deliverance is shared.

April 8 is Easter, a holiday celebrated by Christians to recognize Jesus’ return from death after the crucifixion. It is considered to be the most important Christian holiday.
