Five Barriers to Advancement for Women of Color at Work

In the race for top corporate talent across all levels, women of color are an imperative, yet vastly underutilized, business resource. With increasing globalization, it makes good business sense to develop strategies to ensure that women of color thrive. Their leadership can be the key to exploring new markets, increasing consumer loyalty, adding creativity and diversity in decision making, and providing fresh insights into a growing consumer base. But, despite their proven value in the workplace, women of color are facing hurdles as they attempt to rise in the corporate ranks.

Here are five common barriers that prevent women of color from getting ahead at work:

  1. An inability to identify an influential sponsor, or mentor, within their organization. Nearly all people in executive ranks have had someone help them along the way, someone who can speak on their behalf at meetings or guide them through the corporate maze of managerial development. If a woman of color is not in the pipeline to be recognized, she won’t be. Diversity Holidays
December 1 is World AIDS Day, which was created to commemorate those who have died of AIDS, and to acknowledge the need for a continued commitment to all those affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

December 5 is Ashura, a holiday recognized by Muslims to mark the martyrdom of Hussain. It also commemorates that day Noah left the ark, and when Moses was saved from the Egyptians by God.
