| Diversity Holidays September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, a period in the United States when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the country and celebrate Hispanic culture. This month corresponds with the independence of eight Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize.
October 1-31 is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual observance created to raise awareness about disability employment issues and to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities.
October 11 is Columbus Day, recognizing the encountering of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
October 11 is National Coming Out Day. For those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender this day celebrates coming out and recognizes the 1987 March on Washington for gay and lesbian equality.
October 11 is also National Indigenous People’s Day to recognize 500 years of resistance and the continued existence of North American Indigenous people. This is celebrated in lieu of Columbus Day by Native Americans.
